Newly inaugurated President Mary J. C. Hendrix carries the ceremonial torch to the Wellness Center to open Relay for Life.

Relay For Life Kicks Off At Shepherd

(THE PICKET) – Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society’s annual philanthropic event benefitting cancer research, was held this Friday evening and Saturday morning at the Wellness Center.

Cancer survivors were honored in a ceremonial lap around the Wellness Center track, and those who had their lives cut short by the disease were also commemorated. Student organizations set up booths where they raised money for cancer research through games and activities.

This year’s Relay coincided with the inauguration of Shepherd University’s new President, Dr. Mary J. C. Hendrix, who presided over the ceremonial torch lighting Friday afternoon.

The American Cancer Society gave Dr. Hendrix her first grant of her academic career, which she used to establish a cancer research laboratory. “I will always remember [the ACA], I will remember all of the patients and all of the people affected by cancer who have truly impacted our work,” she said.

“We’re coming full circle today, it all started at Shepherd,” Dr. Hendrix said, referring to her time as a Shepherd student. “We are here to celebrate, to remember, and to fight back [against] cancer.”
