Fifteen-Year-Old Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle in Shepherdstown

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal traffic accident that took place in Shepherdstown, W.Va on Thursday, Oct. 16. According to The Martinsburg Journal, a Jefferson High School student died after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle.

Jefferson County Sheriff Pete Dougherty said the victim, a 15-year-old male, was flown to an area hospital immediately after the accident took place at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Gardners Lane. Apparently, the passenger vehicle that struck the victim was being driven by another student.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s office however preliminary findings show that drugs and alcohol were most likely not involved in the fatal incident.

“Basically, the student had gone into cardiac arrest when the EMTs were there. The Prognosis at the scene did not look very good,” Sheriff Dougherty told The Martinsburg Journal.

Dougherty also said that the accident took place in proximity to the boy’s house. Preliminary information shows that the teenager was coming across a yard on his bicycle and went on to the roadway at a spot that had somewhat of a turn.

According to Dougherty, “The driver of the vehicle may have had an obstructed view.”

Currently, no one has been charged with a crime as a result of the accident.
