Women’s basketball falls at UVA-Wise

(THE PICKET) —The Rams couldn’t hold on to the momentum from Tuesday’s win, taking a 63-102 loss on the road against UVa-Wise on Thursday. With this loss, Shepherd falls to 5-14 overall and 4-9 in the Mountain East Conference.

UVa-Wise opened the game with a 19-6 run and the first quarter ended with the Cavaliers up 28-14. Wise had a 57-33 lead at halftime and Shepherd was never able to recover.

Junior guard Cara Mason led the Rams with 18 points. She hit 8-of-18 field goal attempts with a two-of-three performance from the foul line. Mason also added four assists.

Junior forward Liz Myers contributed 15 points and three steals, while sophomore guard Morgan Arden added 12 points and four assists.

The Rams connected on 39.1 percent (27-69) from the floor with a 28.6 percent (2-7) performance from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 53.8 percent of their free throws (7-13) while UVa-Wise hit on 55.7 percent (39-70) of theirs with a 35 percent (7-20) effort from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers were successful on 85 percent (17-20) of their free throws.

UVa-Wise had a 50-28 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and committed 13.

The Rams return to the court on Saturday when they travel to Concord for a 2 p.m. game.
