Students Learn Dance Moves Through Multicultural Student Affairs Program

Multicultural Student Affairs is sponsoring Latin ballroom dance lessons for students and the community.

Twice a month, the dance class is held in the Storer Ballroom in the Student Center. Taught by dancer and choreographer Timothy Bennett, students learn basic cha-cha steps and other rhythmic movements.

“The first step to dancing is finding a tempo,” Bennett said as he instructed the students how to find the beat to the music. After finding the rhythm and teaching the traditional “cha-cha” steps, Bennett put the students in partners to dance in harmony. This gave students a chance to interact with each other without feeling intimidated or embarrassed.

“Dancing is the ultimate social skill,” Bennett said. “It’s a lot of fun and it solidifies social skills.”

Students are encouraged to attend these dance lessons to meet new people in a fun environment.

“People don’t know how to dance anymore,” Ashley Burdette, elementary education alumna said. “This will teach students how to dance.”

The next ballroom lessons will be on Nov. 3 from 12 – 1 p.m., Nov. 10  from 2 – 3 p.m. and Nov. 14 from 7:30 – 9 p.m.
