Shepherd women’s soccer starts out season in shutout fashion

(THE PICKET) —The Shepherd women’s soccer team began their season Sunday, Sept. 6, with a commanding 4-0 shutout victory over the Chowan University Hawks.

The Rams quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game. Samantha Leonard scored on a pass from Kylie Duffin for her first of two goals of the day.

The next goal came in the 34th minute when a shot by Abby Hoffman was deflected back into play and headed in by Lexy Junker.

In the 58th minute, Samantha Leonard added her second goal of the day beating the goalie during a one-on-one breakaway.

In the 82nd minute of play, Lexy Junker netted her second and Shepherd’s fourth and final goal of the game when she drilled a shot past the diving goal keeper.

The Shepherd defense only allowed one shot throughout the game..

The next Rams game is away against Notre Dame College Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m.
