(THE PICKET)—The Shepherd University women’s basketball team started the season 0-2 after losses to the Virginia Union University Panthers and the Winston Salem State Rams this past weekend.
Shepherd’s opening game Saturday, Nov. 14, against Virginia Union University was a hard fought battle that remained close throughout the entire game, but the score was in favor of VUU when the final horn sounded.
The first half saw the Rams play neck and neck with the Panthers with neither team getting more than 4 points ahead. The lead changed hands 10 times with the Panthers having the 41-36 advantage heading into halftime.
Shepherd came out of halftime outscoring the panthers 23-17 in the third quarter, gaining a 1-point advantage heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The Panthers wasted little time in the fourth, and they took the lead back early in the quarter and never gave it back, outscoring the Rams 38-27 to close out the game and earning the 96-88 victory.
The Rams were led in points and rebounds by junior forward Liz Myers who finished the game with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in 41 minutes played. Rams players Kristen Nunn and Morgan Arden both added 24 and 20 points in the loss.
The Rams lost their second game of the weekend on Sunday, Nov. 15, when the Winston Salem State Rams took the lead early and ran away with it.
Shepherd started the game out slow only scoring 19 points in the first half compared to Winston Salem State’s 50, giving the WSS Rams plenty of cushion heading into halftime with a 31-point lead.
Shepherd came out of halftime with a deficit that would be hard to overcome. The Rams drew to within 20 points midway through the third quarter, but the hole that had already been dug was too deep. As the final buzzer sounded, Shepherd found themselves on the losing end of 46-68 final score.
