Shepherd University students and staff collected 25 pounds of donated food during the month of August and the first week of September for the Mega Food Drive.
The Mega Food Drive is run by the Emerging Young Leaders of the Eastern Panhandle for United Way, a national system of volunteers, contributors, and local charities.
“What I do love is, food drives here on campus inspire students to do more,” said Rachel Crum, the Shepherd University Community Services and Service Learning Coordinator. “[They] bring awareness to campus,” Crum said of the food drives. The drives often influence student organizations to initiate their own. Crum would like to encourage more student-run drives and can be contacted at rcrum@shepherd.edu for additional information.
“The food drive took place in Morgan, Berkeley and Jefferson counties,” Matt Stickle said. He chairs the Emerging Young Leaders here on campus and coordinated the event. “Total donations totaled around 11,000 pounds,” he said. Donations in Morgan County went to Starting Points. In Jefferson County, they went to Jefferson County Community Ministries. Berkeley county collections were split between the Berkeley County Backpack Program and CCAP.
