Shepherd baseball starts season in slump

(THE PICKET)The Rams started the season out slow with a pair of losses to Mount Olive University Saturday, Feb, 7.

The Rams put themselves in an early hole in game one when starting pitcher Jamie Driver gave up seveb earned runs in only two innings of work. Pitcher AJ Snead gave up only one earned run the remainder of the game. Shepherd’s only scoring came in the top of the third inning when RBIs from Brandon Kirk, Ron Farley and a throwing error by Mount Olive gave the Rams their only three runs of the game.

Freshman Christian Hamel led Shepherd at the plate going 2-4 with a triple.

Jacob Carney, JJ Sarty, Brandon Kirk, Ron Farley, Tre Porter, and Tyler Thomas also added hits for the Rams.

In game two of the double header it seemed to be a clone of game one with the Rams falling behind 6-0 after the first two innings. Shepherd drew closer in the fourth inning with RBIs from Christian Hamel and Sam Crater made the score 6-2. Mount Olive continue to pile on runs making the final score 10-4, and dropping the Rams record to 0-2 to start of the season.

Freshman Christian Hamel again shined at the plate adding another two hits and RBI finishing the day with four hits in his collegiate opener.

JJ Sarty had two hits in game two including a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Jacob Carney, Tre Porter, and Tyler Thomas also added hits for the Rams.

Shepherd will take the field again Saturday, Feb 13 ,in their home opener double header which will begin at 12 against the University of Pittsburg Johnstown.
