Shepherd edges Concord 21-7

On a windy fall day at Ram Stadium, Shepherd improved 6-0 after a hard fought 21-7 victory over conference rival Concord University.

 

Shepherd received the opening kickoff of homecoming weekend, driving 70 yards down the field in 4:24, capping the drive off with a 1-yard rush from Brandon Hlavach giving the Rams a 7-0 early lead.

Shepherd and Concord swapped scores in the second quarter with the Mountain Lions striking first on a 23-yard pass from Brian Novak to Davon McGill, tying the game at 7. Hlavach added a 46-yard touchdown run on the next drive to give the Rams a 14-7 lead heading into the half.

 

The Rams scored the lone touchdown of the second half late in the third quarter when quarterback Jeff Ziemba scrambled from 13 yards out, making the score 21-7. This score would remain the rest of the game, giving Shepherd their 16 consecutive regular season victory.

The Rams offense had a hard time finding the end-zone, however it still managed to accumulate 400 yards of offense with Ziemba going 20-27 for 253 yards and Hlavach rushing for 108 yards on 15 carries.

 

Shepherd’s defense, as they have done all season, shined today allowing the Mountain Lions to gain 188 yards.

 

“I thought the defense played outstanding,” head coach Monte Cater said after the victory

 

The Rams will travel to West Liberty West Virginia next Saturday Oct. 29, to take on West Liberty University, hoping to improve to 7-0.
