Man dies in electrical wires at Shepherd

(THE PICKET) – An email was sent to Shepherd University students and employees this afternoon from President Mary J.C. Hendrix after an employee of a contractor hired by the University was killed in an electrical accident.

“A death has occurred at a Shepherd University construction site on the afternoon of July 5,” the email said, “The deceased was an employee of a contractor at the construction site. Next of kin have been notified. Shepherd University Police are leading the investigation. On behalf of the Shepherd University community, we are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.”

The first email was sent to campus residents from the director of residence life around 4:00 p.m. stating an accident was reported on the site of the new residence hall construction location and advised students to use caution around the area until the site was cleared.

According to a press release from Harkins Builders, which is the company building the new hall, the groundbreaking ceremony for the 81,000 square foot building which is expected to have space for over 300 students, was held on Wednesday, June 22.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released as the investigation is still ongoing.
