(THE PICKET) Pedestrians won’t be able to cross the Duke and High Street intersection when changes to the corner at Miller Hall begin Tuesday, Aug. 16.
Instead, pedestrians are asked to use the Route 480 underpass.
“The underpass allows hundreds of pedestrian crossings each day, all safely removed from the 5,500 vehicles which pass north or south on the roadway on a daily basis,” James Vigil, Shepherd University vice president of administration wrote in an Aug. 11 email to the university community. It was built in 2012-2013 at a cost of more than $6 million.
The intersection will be closed to pedestrian traffic because of frequent near-misses between vehicles and students and the lack of nighttime street lighting on High Street. In past years there have been several collisions between students and vehicles at the intersection, but to date none have been fatal.
The stairs on the Miller Hall corner will be removed and the existing stone wall will be extended to fill the gap.
