The WE CAN program is looking for volunteers to help tutor foster children and local students.
The Children’s Home Society of West Virginia is a child welfare organization group that supports the well-being of foster children while helping them to find a loving family.
The WE CAN volunteer program is looking for up to 10 volunteers to serve as tutors and mentors to children ages 5 – 17 every other Saturday from 12 – 4 p.m. From foster kids to children in the community, tutors will help the kids in the subjects of math, spelling, English, reading and any other area of study needed. Once a month, volunteers help the children in arts and crafts, such as carving pumpkins. The children also participate in other extracurricular activities, such as fishing.
“All the kids don’t have a mentor,” said Celestine Boyd, the program coordinator of the WE CAN program. “They are very friendly kids and they always need help with something.”
“This is a nice, steady program,” said Deb Tadler, a longtime mentor of the WE CAN program. “They are very nice and caring kids. They want to be there.”
Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Celestine Boyd at boyd@childhswv.org or 304-260-0400.
