Shepherd baseball takes two from West Virginia State

In a packed Fairfax Field Thursday the Rams dominated the Mountain East conference southern division leading West Virginia State improving their record to 12-5 and 5-1 in conference play.

The Rams started slow in game one with pitcher Colin Benner gave up four earned runs in the first two innings. The Rams and Yellow Jackets remained quiet in the third, but in the bottom of the fourth Shepherd’s bats came alive. With a home run from Brandon Kirk and an RBI single from Ron Farley the Rams tied the game at 4. The flood gates opened in the bottom of the fifth with the Rams scoring a astonishing 12 runs on their way to a 16-4 victory in game one of the double header.

Tre Porter led the Rams at the plate in game one going 2-3 with a walk, homerun, and 3 runs scored. Colin Benner improved his record to 2-0 in the victory.

Shepherd carried the momentum from game one into game two scoring six runs in the second inning including a triple from Porter and a home run by Farley giving Shepherd an early 6-2 lead. The Rams added another 7 runs over the next 3 innings to extend their lead to 13-4. The Yellow Jackets added three runs in the eighth but the score was too steep to overcome as Shepherd held on for the 13-7 victory.

Farley led the Rams at the plate in games two going 3-4 with a home run , three RBI’s, and three runs scored. John Bently earned the win brining his record to 2-2 on the season.

The Rams will hit the field again at home Saturday when they take on University of Charleston in a double header at 1 and 3 p.m .
