Local Spring Break Destinations

At last, Spring Break is almost here! We will finally be able to sleep in and enjoy our week in total relaxation. Unless you have a project or paper to work on during your break (ugh, very annoying), here are some local spots to consider spending time at…

Mountain Justice Spring Break
As we live in the heart of coal mining country, this trip will let out the inner activist in you. The dates are March 10 to 17. The events will cover mountaintop removal, hydraulic fracturing and building sustainable energy in Appalachia. You are able to come at any time during the week, though staying for the entire duration is preferred. The trip will be held at Doddridge County Park and registration includes yummy homemade food, lodging and all activities. You can check out www.mjsb.org for more info.

River Riders
Located in Harpers Ferry, River Riders is a fantastic place to venture for a day or two! If you are brave enough, you can go whitewater rafting on the Shenandoah or Potomac Rivers, or you can conquer the world in the Aerial Adventure Park.

Hiking
Take a trip to Cacapon State Park or Harpers Ferry for the day. We are lucky to live in an area surrounded by beautiful trails, so now is the time to take advantage of it! For an awe-inspiring destination, check out Big Schloss in the George Washington National Forest.

Biking
If you’ve got two wheels, it’s time to pedal down the C&O Canal towpath along the Potomac River. Your trip will lead you into the mile-long Paw Paw tunnel. For mountain bikers, it’s time to dust off your frame and get on those trails!

Beauty & Relaxation
Treat yourself to a day at the spa! You can choose to get a massage, facial, manicure or pedicure. With a full day of pampering, the stress of school will soon wash away.
Have a picnic at one of the wineries in Loudon County, Va. As Loudon County has more wineries than any county in the state, you can make a day out of visiting all of the estates. You’re sure to love the rolling hills and beautiful landscape surrounding the vineyards.

Culture
Take a day trip to Washington D.C. You’ll need to plan your day in advance by deciding what museums to visit and which performances to watch. The cherry blossoms are almost ready to bloom!

Beaches
If you insist on going to the beach but cannot afford a trip to warmer weather, check out local destinations like Ocean City and Virginia Beach. Businesses are beginning to offer spring break packages, and since the beaches are closer to home, you’re likely to save some money.

Winter Adventure
If you love to ski or snowboard, check out the Snowshoe Resort. Other exciting activities include zip lining and tubing. The resort offers reasonable student rates whether you plan on going during the week or weekend. They are hosting a spring break party this year from March 8 to 11.
