Fun and Frugal Valentine’s Day Ideas

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and that means it’s time to start planning how you want to celebrate with that special someone. It is easy to get carried away and overspend on this holiday, but that’s not necessary. Here are some fun date night ideas that will help you stay on budget while having a great Valentine’s Day:

1. Stay In and Have a Movie Marathon.

Whether you rent a couple of new releases from Redbox or pick out some old favorites, you’ll definitely have a cozy night with your significant other. This is cheaper and more private than going to the movie theater. Plus, you can feel free to discuss the films without disturbing any other movie goers. Just grab a bowl of popcorn and you are all set!

2. Cook Dinner Together.

Cooking together is more fun and cheaper than eating at an expensive restaurant. Shepherd student Taryn Burkhart said, “For Valentine’s Day we like to do something simple and cheap like making dinner at home and watching a movie.” Not only is this an affordable date idea, but cooking allows you to work together and create something. If you are feeling adventurous, you can try a new recipe and see how it turns out.

3. Go Ice Skating.

Ice skating is a great activity to do with your date since you know you will have someone there to hold your hand while gliding across the slippery ice. It is also a budget-friendly option as most places charge less than $10 per person for both entrance fees and skate rentals.

4. Plan a Scavenger Hunt

You can leave your date a trail of clues leading them to significant places from your relationship or some of their favorite places in town. This is a fun way to show him or her how much you care and it will only cost you a bit of creativity!

5. Take a Walk and Go Star Gazing

Bundle up in your warmest coats and enjoy the natural beauty of the night sky this Valentine’s Day. Since we live in such a rural area, on clear nights we have a gorgeous view of the twinkling stars. For added warmth, bring along a thermos of hot chocolate and a blanket on your adventure.

These are just a handful of fun and inexpensive ideas for Valentine’s Day. Use your imagination and come up with some of your own. Remember: expensive and elaborate gifts are not essential for this holiday. Just find some fun ways to spend time with the one you love.
