It’s not often that a Shepherd Ram makes it all the way to the National Football League. The way that Dom Jones made it makes it even that much more odd.
First off, he is from San Diego, Calif., home of legends such as Tony Gwynn, the late Junior Seau and Ron Burgundy. After graduating from the Horizon Christian Academy he headed to Lynchburg, Va. to play for the Liberty University Flames.
When the opportunity arose for Shepherd offensive coordinator Ernie McCook to take the job of the tight ends coach with Liberty, he jumped at the chance. McCook stayed one season before coming back to Shepherd. He brought Jones with him.
In his only season with the Rams, he amassed 34 catches for 403 yards along with nine touchdowns. During his only season with Shepherd, he helped take the team to the NCAA Division II semi-finals, where the Rams fell to Delta State.
After leaving Shepherd, Jones played the Reading Express of the Indoor Football League. He also spent time with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. However, his big break came in 2012, when he spent a vast majority of the season on the practice squads of both the Indianapolis Colts and the Miami Dolphins, both members of the American Football Conference in the National Football League.
He only recorded one catch for eight yards in 2012, but has already passed that total so far this season. His only catch during the young 2013 campaign went for 13 yards. With the Colts’ tight end, Dwayne Allen, being lost for much of the year, expect them to lean much more heavily on Jones.
