The Lady Rams were able to break their losing streak and record their first win on the season, beating Fairmont State 7-2 on Friday, Oct. 3. The Lady Rams also suffered losses to University of Virginia at Wise, 7-2, and to West Virginia Wesleyan, 7-1.
Although the UVa-Wise matchup was expected by coaches and players alike to be close, the Lady Rams were only able to secure two wins for the day. Freshman Molly Lovern achieved a 6-3, 7-5 win at number two singles, while senior Stacy Brewbaker and sophomore Jill Spuria gained an 8-5 victory at number three doubles. Spuria also took her singles match to three sets despite losing in the end.
Shepherd had a much needed opportunity to play again on Friday, Oct. 3 and finally saw a 7-2 victory. The Rams swept the doubles competition against Fairmont State. Katelyn Mumaw and Molly Lovern won 8-6, Alice D’Alauro and Chloe Raines won 8-5, and Stacy Brewbaker and Jill Spuria had a final score of 8-4.
The Lady Rams also gained four more wins in the singles competition. Mumaw, Spuria, and Brooke Davis won their singles matches in two sets, while D’Alauro won her singles match after going into a third set.
The team continued their road trip and faced West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 4. Wesleyan swept the singles matches and won number one and two doubles. The match was held up by the rain, causing three different delays for a total of four hours. The number six singles match was not completed due to the inclement weather.
Shepherd will return to action on Sunday Oct. 5 when they travel to West Liberty University to take on the 4-0 Hilltoppers.
