An unremarkable season came to an end on March 4 as the Shepherd University women’s basketball team lost 102–84 to Urbana in the inaugural Mountain East Conference tournament. The loss was really a microcosm of the season for the Lady Rams as they were well-beaten and out-performed in pretty much every statistic.
Cara Mason scored 24 points to lead the Rams, and she was a perfect 9–9 from the charity stripe. Gabby Flinchum added 15 points and grabbed six rebounds while Rachel Johnson of nearby Frederick, Md. added 10 points. All in all, it was a rough day, and the Rams saw themselves out-rebounded by Urbana.
One of the real problem areas this season for the Lady Rams was their inability to hang onto the basketball as they always seemed to be on the negative of the turnover statistic. If you don’t have the ball, you can’t score. Taking care of the basketball is vital to a team that has trouble scoring. So often, turning over the ball when in conjunction with an ineffective offense will lead to losses Unfortunately, that was often the final result for the Rams this season.
The season was not all negative by any stretch for the Lady Rams. Flinchum was named to the Mountain East Conference second team for her efforts, and Mason was named the Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year. The Urbana High School graduate averaged 11.2 points per game and led the Rams in both assists per game as well as steals per game. If all goes well, the Rams will be more competitive next season.
