Women’s Basketball Endures Rough Year

To put it bluntly, the Shepherd University women’s basketball team is enduring a rough year. The team currently sits at 2–12 overall, while being 2–8 in their first season of the Mountain East Conference. During some of their losses, they have been completely blown out, such as losses to West Chester, Glenville, Indiana (Pa.), West Virginia State and Concord. For example, they lost to Glenville by 53 points.

In fact, only two players on the Rams are averaging double-digits in terms of points. Those players would be Gabby Flinchum and Rachel Johnson who average 15.9 and 11.9 per game respectively. Cara Mason averages nearly ten points with 9.9. Jimyse Brown routinely scores eight points, but her field goal percentage is superb, making two out of every three shots she attempts.

Flinchum also averages an impressive 8.8 rebounds per contest, while also shooting a respectable 72.4 percent from the charity stripe. Brown also averages six rebounds per contest and shoots a fair 67 percent from the line. However, if the team wants to improve upon their record, they are going to have to do some major work in the film room as well as on the court.

Defensively, the Lady Rams really need to improve. Giving up huge chunks of points to the opposition will only make it more difficult for the team to put more checks in their win column. The team really needs to shore up on the glass as well, as they have been regularly out-rebounded by the opposition.

The Lady Rams have an opportunity to get back on track this week as they take on Fairmont as well as West Virginia State. Both of the games occur at home in the Butcher Center Gymnasium. Hopefully these two matchups will see the Rams get back into the win column, something they need desperately.
