In Shepherdstown, Sunday, Oct. 22, the Shepherd Rams women’s soccer team fought back in the second half to tie Wheeling Jesuit University 1-1 on Senior Day.
At the start of the game, the Rams cheered as their senior midfielder Danielle Fernandez used her crutches to get off the field, as she was substituted for sophomore Brogan Pifer. Fernandez suffered a season-ending injury to her knee last week against Urbana.
Shepherd took many shots in the first half, but just could not find the back of the net. The team took a total of 19 shots, with six of them being on goal. The score of the game does not really give you an understanding of what went on. The Rams had many opportunities to win the game by a good margin.
At the end of the first half, Wheeling Jesuit heated things up on offense, as they would have two back-to-back corner kicks. The Cardinals capitalized on the second one, a header by Natalie Idermuhle, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead .
In the second half both teams looked to put points on the board, as they went back and forth exchanging shots. On paper both teams matched each other, with seven shots and six corner kicks.
Shepherd would finally take advantage of their opportunities when sophomore Brooke Harwood passed to senior Samantha Leonard, who as kicked one past Cardinals goalkeeper Hannah Thompson.
The Rams would come close to scoring another goal, but they just could not capitalize on their numerous chances.
The Lady Rams will look to change things around on offense when they go on the road to face Concord University, Wednesday, Oct. 25. Game time is 1 p.m.
