Tennis Star Named to First Team All-Mountain East

Katelyn Mumaw is a junior elementary education major here at Shepherd University. The Mountain East Conference named her to the inaugural Mountain East Conference First Team for tennis. Recently, the local Charles Town, W.Va. native took some time out of her hectic schedule to answer a few questions.

Q: Where do you like to eat on campus?

A: I mainly eat at the Wellness Center Café—their smoothies are great! Also, the Ram’s Den has really stepped up their game this year with the sushi and Mexican bar.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your downtime?

A: I hang out with my family, boyfriend and friends.

Q: Considering you’re an elementary education major, what grade would you ideally like to teach?

A: Fourth or fifth grade would be ideal for me. I have had the opportunity to go to many elementary classrooms since I’ve been here at Shepherd, and I really like working with that age group. I think I will enjoy that age because they are creative and more independent.

Q: How does it feel to be named All-Conference First Team?

A: It feels great! It was a goal of mine.

Q: Were you surprised?

A: I knew I had a pretty good chance because of my record.

Q: How do you prepare to do the same next season?

A: I will continue to workout, eat well and hit plenty of tennis in the off-season. I had a lot of close matches this season. In those matches, I focused on being patient and going for my shots when I had the chance.

Q: What will help the team to improve next season?

A: We will continue to workout and hit in the off-season. As a team we won more matches this year than we did last year. We lost some close matches this season at 5–4. I believe that we can win those matches next year and have a better finish in the conference.

Q: How do you plan on helping the team, given the fact that you are the team leader.

A: It’s easy being a leader on our team. It’s a fun group of girls and we get along well. We practice hard. I try to set a good example for my teammates by never giving up and fighting for every point.
