Student Nursing Association Hosts Chili Cook-Off

McMurran Hall

While the football MEC championship roared to life on the Shepherd University football field, the Student Nursing Association held a chili cook-off outside on the midway, catering to football fans and passerby.

A group of around 15 came in with 10 family chili recipes to raise money in the friendly competition.

Joy Johnstone, the president of the Student Nursing Association, said that the chair of the nursing department, Sharon K. Mailey, and several of the other nursing professors stopped by to show support. “It was great to feel the support from the department,” Johnstone said.

The chili was initially $5 for an unlimited number of samples, but was changed as the day wore on to just donations. The fundraiser cooked up more than $600.

Cook-off winner Todd Staubs received a gift card to Chili’s for his “back talk” chili, which was voted fan favorite. Staubs is also the father of Hannah Staubs, the chair of the nurses fundraising committee. Todd stood on the sidewalk ushering and encouraging people to check out the cook-off.
