(THE PICKET) – The Student Life Council held elections on Monday, Sept. 28, for two open spaces, said SGA vice president Caitlin O’Connor. Diana Ling and Giuliana Porco became the newest members of the Student Life Council.
Diana Ling is a sophomore transfer nursing major, and this is her first year at Shepherd. “I wanted to join in a club, and I was interested in becoming a member of the SLC,” Ling said.
She has two sisters, Ni and April, who are already members of SLC. “I like everything about the club and decided I wanted to become a member,” Ling said.
Giuliana Porco is a sophomore accounting major.
“I wanted to be on the SLC because I am a transfer student and a commuter, so I have been trying to make an effort to be connected on campus despite not being here at all times,” Porco said.
“Two students ran for the two open seats so it was not a close election as the seats were uncontested,” said Dr. Tom Segar, vice president for Student Affairs.
The SLC requires a 2.5 GPA and for the students to be enrolled in the fall and spring semester to be on the council.
The Student Life Council is an organization that is responsible for recommending campus wide student life policies to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the President’s Executive Staff and other groups that establish policies. It also helps to benefit students on campus and to build a bridge between students and faculty.
The SLC establishes committees to review policies and maintains permanent subcommittees like Family Day, the Performing Arts Series at Shepherd, Program Board, Student Recognition Day, and the Leadership Conference at Shepherd.
The members include the Student Government Association president, Program Board president, six students elected at-large, two graduate students recommended by the Dean of the Graduate School, four faculty members elected by the Assembly, the Dean of Students and five staff members appointed by the Dean of Students or the Vice President for Student Affairs.
The SLC meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 5 p.m. in the Student Center. Meetings are open to any student who would like to attend. For more information, contact the Student Government Association.
