Shepherd Women’s Soccer Team Wins Two Straight

The Shepherd University women’s soccer team has won two out of their last three games however, they currently find themselves sitting fifth in the Mountain East Conference standings.

The team has found success on the offensive side of the ball up to this point in the season as they have scored 15 goals on 183 shots. On the other hand, the Lady Rams have struggled defensively. They have allowed 15 goals so far this year and that is tied for the most among Mountain East Conference teams.

Shepherd rebounded from the shutout loss to Notre Dame with a narrow 1-0 victory over West Liberty on Oct. 1. Junior forward Kylie Duffin scored on an assist from senior midfielder Kelsey J. Smith in the 44th minute to post the only goal of the game. It would be enough as the Lady Rams would hang on for the win.  Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Mueller recorded two saves in the contest to keep West Liberty from rallying and tying the game.

On Oct. 5 Shepherd traveled to Urbana and would claim their second straight win courtesy of an unassisted goal by senior forward Taylor Amsley just ten minutes into the game. It would prove to be the only goal scored by either side in the match. The Lady Rams held a 12-6 advantage in shots and freshman goalkeeper Angela Baker had a stellar performance as she made three saves to preserve the shutout.

With the win, the Lady Rams improved their record on the year to 5-5-1 overall and 3-4-0 against MEC opponents. On Wednesday, Oct. 8 the Shepherd women’s soccer team will play Concord University and they travel to face the University of Charleston on Oct. 11.
