In a late season out-of-conference double header Tuesday the Rams traveled to the Slippery Rock University Lions improving their record to 25-9 overall on the season.
The Rams got on the board first in game one when Chase Hoffman smacked a double into right field scoring Ron Farley giving Shepherd the 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second. Slippery Rock took the lead in the second inning scoring two of their own making the score 2-1 after two. Shepherd rallied in the third playing small ball scoring three runs on a bunt by JJ Sarty, a sacrifice fly by Farley, and an infield single from Christian Hamel, making the score 4-2 after three innings of play. Slippery Rock drew to within one in the fifth making the score 4-3 with two innings to play. Daniel Heleine added a security run in the seventh with a RBI single scoring Sarty and pitcher Daniel Galati shut the door out of the bullpen giving Shepherd the 5-3 victory.
Tyler Mister earned his first win of the year in the 5-3 victory.
In a game that looked very similar to the Rams’ weekend series against Wheeling Jesuit, Shepherd jumped out early and took total control of the game. The Rams showed versatility in the game scoring 10 runs over the first two innings without a single homerun and only two extra base hits. The Lions scored 4 over the following innings and Daniel Heleine added a homerun in the seventh as the Rams went on to win 12-4.
Heleine led the Rams at the plate going 2-2 with two walks and 3 RBI’s on the day. Jamie Driver improved his record to 4-4 in the blowout victory.
Shepherd will hit the field again Saturday, April 28, when they take on West Liberty University in a double header starting at 1 p.m.
