Shepherd University symphonic band delivers: a review

The Shepherd University symphonic band and wind ensemble performed an incredible concert last Friday. The conductor, Scott Hippensteel, led the band through the performance with a wide array of songs such as Chimes of Liberty, Bayou Breakdown, In Storm and Sunshine and Awayday.

Typically, the only people that ever attend a band concert are family and friends of a performer, but that doesn’t apply to Shepherd. The audience was packed, and an excited buzz filled the large auditorium as he awaited the show.

The opening numbers, my favorite being Yorkshire Ballad, had my imagination carrying me through a renaissance festival as I tapped my foot to the beat and enjoyed the show.

The orchestra’s tone switched from light and airy to an angrier sound during Bayou Breakdown, the musicians easily carrying the song’s tension with each note.

The closing number, Awayday, was an energetic piece that let the ensemble’s energy shine through. I can’t imagine it was easy to play, but it was definitely easy to listen to.

The entire concert made me realize how much I missed playing music and being a part of a school band. I don’t regret spending my Friday night watching their performance.
