Short winter break

(THE PICKET) – Students will have just two weeks off of school between the fall semester of 2017 and the spring semester of 2018.

The fall semester will end on Dec. 18, 2017, and the spring semester will pick up on Jan. 8, 2018.

“It’s purely a function of where the fourth Monday falls in August, and where MLK Day falls in January,” Caitlin O’Connor, the president of the Student Government Association, said in an email.

Graduation for seniors will still take place on Saturday, May 5, 2018.

“Students need a break longer than two weeks. It gives us something to look forward to and time to relax. I pick up extra hours at work during the break, and I’m disappointed that it’s going to be so short,” said Spenser VanHoose a political science major.

“It’s not a very prudent way to schedule. It doesn’t give students or faculty enough time to decompress or travel to see their families for the holidays. I would like to find out more as to why they have to have the schedule this way,” said communications professor Jason McKahan.
