(THE PICKET)- Rams softball took on West Virginia State on Saturday, handing them back-to-back losses. Shepherd took the first game of the double header 6-4 and the second game 8-6.
In the first game of the double header Rams scored first and kept that momentum throughout the game. In the first inning, Paige Bucworth had a 2-RBI single. The Rams struck again in the second with an RBI-single by Alexandra Witt, a 2-RBI double by Connor Gilligan and an RBI by Buckworth.
West Virginia State scored an unearned run in the fourth inning.
The Yellow Jackets gave it all they had in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs. Tara Hanson took the 6-4 win for the Rams.
In the second game of the doubleheader WVSU came out strong scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The Rams plated one unearned run in the second inning.
They were countered by the Yellow Jackets who scored one in the third inning and one in the fifth. Shepherd, down 5-1 going into the fifth, changed up their game plan. The Rams proceeded to scored five runs in a big sixth inning. Molly Staley doubled down the right field line for an RBI. Morgan Cox had a 2-RBI double, along with Kaitlyn Konopka and Buckworth who both had an RBI.
West Virginia State scored one in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 6-6. Shepherd took the game when they plated two runs in the eighth inning on a double by Kaitlin Munda. Munda took the 8-6 win for the Rams.
Shepherd sits at 33-12 overall and 24-5 in the Mountain East Conference. The Rams look to add to their 13-game win streak on Sunday when they take on The University of Charleston for a double header.
