Shepherd Softball splits with Concord

(THE PICKET)- Shepherd University split with Concord University on Sunday when the Rams hosted the Mountain Lions for a doubleheader. The Rams rallied for a 6-5 win the nine innings in game one while Concord gained the split with an 11-7 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd tied game one in the second inning with an unearned run and then took a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI-double by Paige Buckworth. Buckworth knocked a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Rams a 4-1 lead.

Concord plated three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game 4-4. The Mountain Lions took a 5-4 lead going into the ninth on an RBI-single.

Kaitlin Munda belted a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth to start a rally for the Rams. Alexandra Witt reached on a walk and later scored the game-winner on a single by Morgan Cox.

Buckworth went 3-for-5 to lead the Rams and Munda picked up the win in the circle.

Concord took the momentum immediately in the nightcap scoring 5 by the second inning. Shepherd quickly retaliated in the bottom of the second plating five runs; An RBI-double by Connor Gilligan, a 2-RBI single by Kaitlyn Konopka and a 2-RBI double by Buckworth.

The Rams were up 7-6 going into the seventh inning when the tables turned. Concord plated five unanswered runs to take the game out of the hands of the Rams. Kristen Barstad took the loss for the Shepherd.

This split puts the Rams at 20-11 overall and 13-4 in the Mountain East Conference. Shepherd takes the field on Monday when the host UVA-Wise for a 1 p.m. double header.
