Shepherd Softball reaches 30-win mark downing Fairmont State

(THE PICKET)- The Rams swept Fairmont State University in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader when they traveled to Fairmont, West Virginia, on Tuesday. Shepherd took a 3-2 win in game one and a 10-6 victory in game two.

The Rams scored two runs in the first inning of game one on a two-RBI single by Rachel Taylor. The Falcons countered in the bottom of the first by plating two runs as well, which tied the game until the seventh inning. Kaitlin Munda homered to right field to give the Rams the 3-2 win. Tara Hanson took the win in the circle for the Rams.

The second game started in more rigorous fashion. The Rams scored five in the first inning on an RBI-single by Connor Gilligan, an error by the Falcons and a three-run homer by Paige Buckworth.

Fairmont put up two runs in the first and one in the second inning for a 5-3 ballgame. Shepherd scored one unearned run in the fourth inning. Fairmont State, fighting to stay alive, scored two in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the scored 6-5.

The Rams plated one run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Courtney Clemons. The Falcons also scored one in the sixth. Going into the seventh inning the Rams were only ahead by one. That quickly changed. Alexndra Witt homered down the left field line scoring three runs. Fairmont State was not able to battle back and the Rams took the sweep. Kaitlin Munda got the win for Shepherd.

The Rams take the field again on Saturday, April 23, when they travel to Institute, West Virginia, to take on West Virginia State for a doubleheader. The Rams currently sit at number one in the Mountain East Conference with an overall record of 31-12 and 22-5 in conference.
