Shepherd Softball Back On Track, Going 2-0 Against West Liberty

Shepherd softball ended the weekend on a high note with a pair of wins against West Liberty University.

Sunday’s first game was a blowout for the Rams, beating West Liberty by a score of 8-1. Shepherd took the lead in the first inning with an RBI from sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan.

They continued to dominate with three more runs in the second inning with two RBIs from freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart and an RBI from sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka.

West Liberty answered with a run in the third inning with Nicki Mihalik’s homerun. The Rams, however, did not slow their momentum, scoring four runs in the sixth. Konopka had an impressive three RBIs in the inning.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda earned the win for Shepherd.

The second game proved much closer, with Shepherd pulling out a 3-2 win.The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the Rams put three runs on the board. Sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor and senior third baseman Alexandra Witt both had RBIs in the crucial inning.

West Liberty answered with two runs in the seventh, but were ultimately shut down on a double play by Shepherd.

The second win went to senior pitcher Tara Hanson.

Shepherd’s offense proved key in Sunday’s games, scoring 11 runs on 20 hits.

Shepherd will take the field again on Wednesday for a doubleheader at home against Shippensburg University. The games will begin at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
