Shepherd Lacrosse edges out West Virginia Wesleyan

Senior midfielder Erin Phelan

The Shepherd Rams survived their toughest test yet in Mountain East Conference play squeaking out a 7-6 win over the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Sunday, April 12.

Junior midfielder Erin Phelan led the Rams with three goals. She leads the team with 35 goals on the season.

Sophomore midfielder Haley Price, junior midfielder Theresa Lang, sophomore attacker Brooke Hunley and freshman midfielder Courtney Matthews each scored one goal.

Junior goalkeeper Savannah Shores had four saves while allowing six goals.

Shepherd coach Meghan Keelan was clearly frustrated with the officiating.

“The game was called really tight,” she said. “We’re a pressure defense and we were getting called for a lot of fouls. We didn’t play our game. It was frustrating but it was a learning experience.”

Despite that, Keelan says “a win’s a win.”

Much like the Wheeling Jesuit game, Shepherd was outscored in the second half. The Rams held a 6-3 lead going into halftime, but were outscored 3-1 in the second half.

Shepherd is now 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the Mountain East Conference. Their next home contest will be Sunday, April 19 against Urbana University, which will be the final MEC game of the regular season.
