Shepherd holds on to beat Shippensburg

Jacob Carney touches home in the victory against Shippensburg

In a midweek single game Tuesday against the Shippensburg University Raiders, the Rams avoided a late game rally to avenge their loss from a week ago when they fell 7-4.

Shepherd took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI single from JJ Sarty scored Jacob Carney and a sacrifice fly from Ron Farley scored Tre Porter. The Rams added another run in the third when Porter scored again, this time off a sacrifice fly from Christian Hamel.

Shepherd made it 4-0 in the fourth when Brandon Kirk scored on a throwing error by the Raiders. A two RBI double by Kirk the next inning gave Shepherd a commanding 6-0 and it looked as if they would win with ease, but Shippensburg had a late rally left in them.

The Raiders scored three times in the seventh making the score 6-3 with two innings remaining. The Shepherd defense held strong in the eighth and allowed only one run in the ninth, holding on for a 6-4 victory.

Kirk led the Rams at the plate going 1-2 with a walk and driving in the two runs that proved to be the deciding factor in the game. Austin Guy earned his first victory of the year on the mound, and Tyler Mister picked up his first save of the year in the victory,

The Rams take the field again Saturday, April 9, when they host Urbana University in a 1 p.m. double header
