The Rams baseball team returned from Richmond, Virginia, Sunday with their first win of the season with a 5-1 victory over the Virginia State University Trojans.
Shepherd struck first in the fifth inning when DH Daniel Heleine doubled and later scored on a home run from first baseman Sam Crater taking a 2-0 lead.
The Rams added another run in the sixth when shortstop Tre Porter reached on an infield single, stole second, and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman catcher Christian Hamel.
The Trojans cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Chris Carter led off with a double and later scored on a ground out by Rodney Shell.
Shepherd added two more runs in the seventh on a sacrifice by outfielder JJ Sarty and a single by Porter.
Senior Pitcher Jamie Driver led the Rams on the mound going six innings giving up just one run and striking out three.
Zane Bard, Brandon Kirk and, Jacob Carney also added hits for the Rams in the victory.
The Rams will hit the field again Friday, traveling to Dinwiddie for a weekend tournament.
