SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va., – The Shepherd University men’s and women’s basketball teams welcomed fans of all ages to their Ram Fam Appreciation Night Tuesday at the Butcher Center. The event was to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle.
The gymnasium at the Butcher Center was filled with players, students and supporters from the community. All attendees had the opportunity to compete in games and win prizes.
Men’s basketball head coach Justin Namolik was happy with the event’s turnout.
“We wanted to try and create an event for fans of all ages,” Namolik said. “I think we were able to do that.”
“I know that the Boys and Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle started their fundraising campaign,” Namolik said. “Hopefully if we’re able to raise some money for their campaign and what they do for the community, I think that’d be great as well.”
Through donations, the event was able to raise $600.
Sophomore Angela DeLorenzo of the women’s basketball team hoped the support for the event would translate into attendance at games.
“Just to see little kids looking up to us, and even our peers out here supporting… it honestly means a lot to me,” DeLorenzo said.
Sophomore Madi White shared a similar sentiment to DeLorenzo’s.
“It means the world to us for all these people to come out,” White said. “It just means we have all these people in our corner behind us, rooting for us. We have hundreds of people who want the Rams to win.”
The women’s basketball team will start their season at 3:00 on November 8 as they take on Fayetteville State University.
The men’s game will be later that day at 7:00 as they face former Mountain East Conference foe University of Charleston.
