Senior Spotlight Series: Interview with Shepherd Women’s Soccer Senior Defender Brianna Gorman

Gorman, pictured here, is majoring in Elementary Education. She believes 6 a.m. workouts everyday was one of the biggest differences from playing in high school to college.

Brianna Gorman, a senior defender on the Shepherd women’s soccer team, talked with The Picket about her mentality as a defender, along with her favorite memories at Shepherd and her future plans.

Gorman, named to the All-MEC Academic Team in 2016, believes that she is here for school first and foremost. She takes a great deal of pride and satisfaction in knowing that she reached this achievement. Sometimes it meant doing her homework on the bus during road trips, which may have been challenging, but Brianna likes to see how her hard work paid off with this recognition.

On the field, as a defender, Gorman commented that her mentality is to not let the ball get to the keeper. She does not want her goalkeeper (junior Christi Labella) to see any unnecessary action.

Originally, Brianna was brought to Shepherd thanks to the fact that it is not far from her hometown of Clarksburg, Maryland, which enables her to be able to see her little sisters. She visited three schools, but found that Shepherd was the best choice for her family and academic needs.

Gorman, who is majoring in Elementary Education, has wanted to be a teacher since she was very young. Also, her mother, Mrs. Gorman, is a teacher, so that influenced her field of study as well. Some of Brianna’s favorite classes that she has taken at Shepherd have been Music and Art Education.

Gorman commented that the biggest difference from playing soccer from high school to college is the 6 a.m. workouts every day. However, during these early morning workouts, she thinks that it is a good bonding time for the team. Gorman explained that playing soccer in college does take up a lot of time and at times feels like a job.

Watch the video below to learn what Brianna wishes she would have known when she first set foot on Shepherd’s campus and what she learned the most about herself during her time at Shepherd.
