On Monday, March 23, Shepherd outfielder Jonathan Sarty was named the MEC Player of the Week following his performance against the University of Charleston.
“It means a lot,” Sarty said. “Put a lot of preparation into it. My dad flew in from Kuwait and was able to watch and be a part of it.”
Head coach Matt McCarty walked by and added, “Give all the credit to your coach.”
In the first game of the series against the Golden Eagles on Sunday, March 22, Sarty had a perfect four-for-four with three RBIs and three runs scored. He also hit his second home run on the season in the third inning.
In game one of the Monday doubleheader, Sarty picked up where he left off, going three-for-four with three RBIs and three runs scored. He added a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sarty ended the week with nine hits in 15 at bats, two home runs, six RBIs and six runs.
Shepherd as a team has been playing great lately, riding a 13 game win streak as of March 27, and winning games by large margins.
Sarty added that with the way the team has been playing, it is making it easier for him.
“You get to relax a little bit,” he said. “Especially with the kids behind me. You know if you get an out, they’ll be right behind you to pick you up.”
Sarty is third on the team with a .446 batting average and tied for second in home runs and RBIs. He has three home runs and 17 RBIs on the season.
