Thursday, March 26, Shepherd University’s literature and arts magazine group Sans Merci held a release party for it’s 39th edition in the Shepherdstown War Memorial Building, 102 East German St., showcasing the artwork, photography and writing in this year’s edition.

“Unreal,” said English major Brian Ardel when he discovered that a selection from his stage play The Mean Seasons had been named best prose.

Ardel, along with English majors Emily Daniels and Emily Spangler, senior Jade Flamenco, Shepherd University graduate Eileen Waggoner, and others who had contributed their literature to the magazine read to those in attendance.

“I’m so excited that I don’t know if I’ll be able to do anything else tonight,” English major Charnelle Willis, who had been given honorable mention for her piece Little Star Cake said.

“It’s a real honor, it’s really cool,” sophomore Molly Langland winner of best art for her piece “Spiritual Cultivation” said.

“We had a really good turn out this year,” Sans Merci advisor Dr. Carrie Messenger said. “Over 100 people attended.”

Other students honored by Sans Merci include Sean Paine and Aaron Brarmmier for best poetry, Jade Flamenco for best prose and Jillian Macmaster for best art.
