Sans Merci Calls for Literary and Art Submissions

“Sans Merci,” Shepherd University’s student-run literary magazine, is seeking submissions for its 39th volume to be released in spring 2015.

Any student has the chance to submit his or her prose, artwork and photography to Sans Merci. In 2012, the magazine was the design winner of the National Program Directors’ Prize for Undergraduate Literary Magazines by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.

Sans Merci accepts poetry, fiction, nonfiction and drama. Students can submit up to five entries with the maximum length of 3,500 words. The deadline for writers is Dec. 17. The magazine also publishes art and photography. Images must be 300dpi jpegs, no longer than 10 inches, and must be available for presentation at the release party in the spring. The deadline for art is Dec. 13. There are no entry fees. During Christmas break, editors from the literary and art sides of the magazine will review and select the works for publication. The best prose, poetry and the two best pieces of artwork will receive $100.

“Sans Merci is a premier artistic outlet,” Eileen Waggoner, one of this year’s senior literary editors, said. “If you are published with us, you are joining a collective of innovative creators—more than just painters and poets, but the voice and vision of Shepherd University.”

“It’s an important addition to the campus,” Kelsey Stoneberger, a junior English major and literary editor, said. “Specifically for letting students be creative when all of the classes are education-based.”

Individuals wanting to submit literary works are to send them to sans.merci.mag@gmail.com. Anyone interested in submitting art is to send the pieces to sansmerciart@gmail.com
