Shepherd Students and Graduates Featured in Regional Publication

“Mind Murals,” the Eastern Regional creative and critical writing publication of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, was published in August and featured three Shepherd graduates and one current student.

Bethany Knight, Katie Fluke, and Stephan Viau all 2013 graduates of Shepherd’s Department of English and Modern Languages had short stories—“Maggie,” “Her” and “Almost Nowhere” respectively—featured in “Mind Murals.” Eileen Waggoner, a junior English major who will be studying in England this academic year, also had her critical essay, “A Moveable Feast: Truth and Fiction to Create Hemingway’s Paris” included.

Waggoner was surprised that she was published in “Mind Murals.”

“I’m happy to be a part of a student publication that attracts such a wide variety of works,” she said.

Waggoner will be studying at Plymouth University in Plymouth, England until next summer, but hopes to be able to submit future work to “Mind Murals.”

Knight, who graduated in 2013 with an English degree, said she had forgotten she submitted work to “Mind Murals.”

“I was also excited that I got to read Katie’s and Stephan’s stories—I remembered their pieces from the fiction class we all took last spring,” she said.

Viau also expressed his surprise regarding his inclusion:

“The magazine has a reputation for only accepting the very best work from students in the Eastern Region, so it is humbling to find my work included.”

Viau, a former vice-president of Shepherd’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta has spent his time since graduating applying to The Peace Corps.

Fluke, another 2013 graduate, shared the pleasure all of her fellow contributors expressed.  She “found it very encouraging to see my work recognized and published by the honor society.”

Dow Benedict, professor of art and Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, was pleased that Shepherd was represented in the publication.

“I am extremely pleased to have the work of four of our students published in ‘Mind Murals.’ It is a highly competitive publication with work submitted from the entire eastern region of the country,” Benedict said.

Dr. Betty Ellzey, Chair of the Department of English and Modern Languages, cited her familiarity with each of the students and their academic work:

“They are all incredibly talented,” she said. All four are “a credit to Shepherd University and to the Department of English.”
