Rams sweep the court in volleyball home opener

Shepherd's Girls Volleyball celebrates their victory.

The Rams volleyball team won their first home game of the season against the Glenville State Pioneers on Sept. 25.

“We want to put a product on the court that people want to see, we want to be exciting to watch,” Coach Hoekstra said.

The Rams won three straight sets 25-20, 25-8 and 25-14. The Rams and Pioneers kept the match exciting with long, energy-filled rallies that had the fans on the edge of their seats.

Seniors Samantha Scroggins and Taylor Allen paced the Rams throughout the match. Scroggins had 13 kills and nine digs, while Allen added 10 kills, eight digs and four aces.

Freshman setter Cyera Dixon had 28 assists and sophomore middle hitter Christine Jackson recorded eight kills and three blocks.

With Shepherd staying in command throughout the match, many freshmen hit the court for the first time in front of their home crowd.

Christine Jackson (#6) and Cyera Dixon (#5) work together on defense to keep up the Rams lead in the game.

“Losing so many seniors last year put us in that position,” Coach Hoekstra said, “but we had such a great recruiting class, we’re lucky enough to have great freshmen that can go in and play right away.”

Glenville falls to a one and nine record after this game.

Rachel Morris, Cassidy Clark and Maura James each had four kills, while Allison Parski added 10 digs for the Pioneers.

With this win, the Rams improve to a 6-7 record overall and 1-0 in the conference.

“We’re always happy with the win, but always find something we can do better,” Hoekstra said.

Shepherd heads to Notre Dame of Ohio on Friday, Oct. 2.
