Rams Softball win streak is back

(THE PICKET)- On April 2, the Rams traveled to Notre Dame College, and from there to Urbana University on Sunday, April 3, handing both teams loses for the series.

The first game against Notre Dame was scoreless until the third inning when an RBI single from Kaitlin Munda scored Kaitlyn Konopka to start a rally. Connor Gilligan doubled to left center to score Munda and put the Rams up 2-0.

Without redemption from the Falcons, Shepherd continued its rally in the fourth with another RBI from Munda scoring Konopka. Paige Buckworth singled to left center scoring Alexandra Witt and Munda.

Notre Dame could not counter back once again. The Rams plated two runs in the top of the fifth with a triple by Courtney Clemons and a single by Konopka.

Munda went 3-for-3 and Konopka went 3-for-4 leading the Rams to a 7-0 shutout against the Falcons for the first game of the doubleheader. Tara Hanson gained the win for the Rams.

Shepherd carried its momentum into the second game, taking a 5-0 shutout against the Falcons.

The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the Rams scored two with an RBI double by Buckworth. Munda later scored on a wild pitch.

In true Falcon fashion, Notre Dame was unable to put any runs on the board and Shepherd went into the seventh inning with bats blazing. A 3-RBI homer by Witt sealed the deal for the Rams with a 5-0 victory to end the day.

Clemons went 3-for-4 and Munda got the win for the Rams.

Shepherd traveled to Urbana University with their heads held high and a two-game win streak they were looking to boost.

The Rams took the first game of the doubleheader by storm scoring 12 runs on 15 hits and holding the Blue Knights to a mere two runs on five hits.

Clemons kicked things off with a 2-RBI single to left field in the second inning. Without rebuttal, the Rams added to their lead in the third with a 3-RBI home run to left center by Buckworth. Urbana countered by plating one run. The score was 5-1 going into the fourth inning.

The Rams’ bats were on fire in the fourth inning with a 2-RBI single by Konopka and a 3-RBI triple by Buckworth. The Blue Knights put up one run in the fourth compared to five that were put up by the Rams.

Shepherd put the icing on the cake when they plated two runs in the fifth with a run walked in and an RBI by Buckworth. Hanson took the 12-2 win for the Rams. Buckworth was 3-for-3 and drove in seven runs while Konopka was 3-for-4 with two runs driven in.

Shepherd continued to run a tight ship going into the second game of the series. The bats exploded in the fifth inning when Witt singled to left plating two runs. That was followed by a two-run home run by Munda. Gilligan topped off the inning when she stole home putting the Rams on top 5-0.

Shepherd didn’t stop there. In the fourth inning, Konopka doubled to center field scoring two unearned runs. Unanswered still, the Rams plated three runs in the fifth.

Munda held her own in the circle and in the batter’s box with a two-run homer that ignited the rally for the Rams. Munda also pitched a shutout 10-0 win, allowing only three hits.

After this weekend, the Rams sit at 17-8 overall and 11-2 in the Mountain East Conference. They improved to a four-game win streak. Shepherd plays again on Tuesday, April 5 when they host Fairmont State University for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
