On a soggy day in Shepherdstown, the Rams improved to 5-0 with a hard fought victory over the Glenville State College Pioneers.
“I thought we played a very clean game given the weather conditions,” said head Coach Monte Cater after the victory.
The 38-7 final score of the game does not reflect the defensive battle that took place through the first three quarters of play.
The Rams broke the ice scoring first midway through the first quarter when quarterback Jeff Ziemba hit running back Deonte Glover for a 14 yard score, putting the rams up 7-0.
A Shepherd field goal as time expired in the second quarter made the score 10-0 heading into the half without much excitement on either sideline.
The Pioneers opened the second half in explosive style, retuning the opening kickoff to the Rams 45 yard line, then throwing a 45 yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage, closing the deficit to three just 16 seconds into the third quarter. The Rams would answer with a 4 yard rushing touchdown from Brandon Hlavach to extend Shepherds lead back to 10 at 17-7.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Rams as they dominated both sides of the ball scoring three touchdowns, including a trick play that looked strait out a John Madden video game on their way to a convincing 38-7 victory over Glenville State.
Senior Quarterback Jeff Ziemba once again led Shepherd’s aerial attack going 27-34 for 334 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Ziemba’s favorite targets on the day were Billy Brown who finished with 7 receptions and 2 scores, and Ryan Feiss who finished the day with 9 receptions for just under 100 yards.
The dual threat of Brand Hlavach and Deonte Glover dominated the ground game for the Rams, combining for 125 yards and 2 scores on the day.
“ I thought Glover had his best game for us so far in today’s game,” Cater said.
Octavius Thomas led the impressive Rams defense finishing the day with 9 tackles and a sack.
“ I can’t say enough about our defense,” Cater said.
The Rams will travel to West Virginia State for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Oct. 15, hoping to improve to 6-0 with a victory.
