The Shepherd Rams baseball team proved to be too much for the Maruders of Millersville University Tuesday, March 19. The Rams scored seven runs in the sixth inning that propelled them to a 14-6 victory.
At the top of the first inning Millersville got things going as Luke Trainer and Jimmy Losh brought runs in.
In the bottom of the first Shepherd would answer with three runs of their own. Justin Smith would single and advance to second base on a error, which brought in Brenton Doyle and Jared Carr. Christian Hammel hit a single to left field that brought Smith in, giving the Rams a 3-2 lead after the first.
Just when it looked like Millersville would stick in the game, first baseman Daniel Carr smacked a two-run double and advanced to third after a bad throw by the Marauders, making the score 6-3.
The score didn’t change until the sixth inning when the Rams gave fans at Fairfax field a show, plating seven runs. It all started when Syeed Mahdi got hit by a pitch, which allowed Doyle to score. Sophomore Trenton Burgreen, had the highlight of the day when he hit a grand slam to left field. At the end the sixth inning the score was 13-3 Rams.
At the top of the seventh with two outs Eric Callahan of Millersville responded with his own homer to left field, bringing in two runs. The Marauder’s next batter grounded out to third base, ending the inning.
The Rams added another score in the bottom of the seventh, and that would be the last score of the game, as Mike Collins
came in to close the game for the Rams.
Shepherd will look to continue their win streak when they travel to Charleston University, Saturday, March 23, at 1 p.m.
This will be a huge game for Shepherd as both teams are the top seed in their divisions, Shepherd (North), Charleston (South), in the Mountain East Conference.
