Rams handed defeat by Fairmont State

(THE PICKET) – The Rams volleyball team fought to the very end, bringing all they had and leaving it on the court with a 12-15 loss to Fairmont State in the fifth set on Tuesday, Oct 6.

Constantly switching momentum, the Fairmont State Falcons took the first set 25-23, and the Rams took the second with 25-19. The Falcons won the third with 25-22, the Rams won the fourth 25-21 and the Falcons took the tiebreaker with a score of 15-12.

The Rams rallied behind seniors Taylor Allen, Samantha Scroggins and Anna Roper, fighting back every point to keep the sets as close as they were.

Junior outside/right side hitter Grace Simmons led the Rams with 11 kills and four blocks. Scroggins contributed nine kills, three aces and 13 digs. Freshman Allison Crumling led Shepherd with four aces. Freshman setter Cyera Dixon added 36 assists, while Kelsey Anderson commanded the defense with 18 digs. Redshirt sophomore Christine Jackson and freshman Sophie Foster both had five blocks, while Jackson also added eight kills. Allen added 14 digs to help the Rams.

Shepherd had 14 aces in total, topping Fairmont’s four aces in the match.

Sophomore Mackenzie Harrison led Fairmont State with 15 kills and one ace, while Jessica Furda added 43 assists. Megan Clerico had 20 digs for the Falcons.

Shepherd takes the court this weekend at home on Friday, Oct. 9, against Wheeling Jesuit University at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, Oct. 10, against West Liberty University at 1 p.m.
