Over the past week, the Shepherd University suffered four straight disappointing loses bringing their overall record to 7-19 with less than a month of the regular season remaining. On Sunday, March 24th the Ram’s dropped both games of a doubleheader against Notre Dame of Ohio College and on Saturday, March 30th they fell to WVIAC rival in both games of their doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan University. Shepherd was scheduled to travel to Elkins, WV to face David & Elkins on Friday, March 29th but due to poor field conditions the game was cancelled and has yet to be rescheduled.
Last Sunday, Notre Dame claimed a 7-3 victory over the Ram’s in the first game and in the night cap they won decisively by the score of 11-3. Both teams failed to plate a run in the first two innings of game one however in the third inning the Falcons broke the stalemate and took the lead by scoring three runs off three hits. They added to their lead in the fourth when Rachel Miller and Megan Turner each drove in a run, making the score 5-0. In the fifth inning, sophomore first basebman Savannah Snyder came on base due to an error and eventually scored on a double by sophomore outfielder Tayler Schafer to put the Rams on the scoreboard.
The Falcons plated two runs in the seventh however Shepherd responded in the bottom of the inning and scored two runs off two hits. Senior outfielder Bianca Biondillio had a single and came home on a Falcon error to score and senior pitcher Tiffany Biggs came on base on a fielder’s choice and scored courtesy of a single by junior shortstop Jess Mason. Despite the late comeback, the Ram’s would come no closer to the win.
In the nightcap, the Ram’s took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after junior Catcher Carly Schmidt reached on an error and scored off a single by freshman pitcher Shannon Lyons but despite this, Notre Dame of Ohio dominated the majority of the contest and rolled over Shepherd by the score of 11-3. The Falcons grabbed the lead in the fourth inning by the score of 4-1 when Kayla Sidorski whacked a grandslam homerun over the fence. Shepherd answered by scoring two runs in the fifth but Notre Dame padded their lead and secured the victory by plating four runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh.
On March 30th, conference rival West Virginia Wesleyan recovered after a meager start, winning by the score of 4-3 in game one of doubleheader action against the Rams. Shepherd grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning after Savannah Snyder had an RBI-double and Kass Taylor batted in an RBI-single yet the Bobcats plated a run in the bottom of the inning and another in the third. Wesleyan tied the game in the sixth as Rachel Ramsey scored on a single, leading to extra innings, and in the eighth they claimed the victory when Ashley Hurey scored on a single by Alex Furr. In the second game of the doubleheader, The Bobcats claimed the shutout win over the Rams by the score of 4-0.
