There is a possibility that murals may be installed on the walls of the underpass that connects east and west campus.
Since the initial designs of the underpass, which was completed last year, there have been ongoing discussions about how the structure could be improved. “Having murals painted and installed was one idea. A living wall—a wall of ivy or other climbing plant—was also discussed as a possibility,” said Dow Benedict, professor of art and dean of the school of arts and humanities.
While there are currently no definite plans to install artwork in the underpass, it may be an upcoming campus beautification project.
Over the years, there have been several other efforts to incorporate artwork around campus. Benedict said that in the 1970s, there was a sculpture placed in the lawn behind Reynolds Hall, and 2-D artwork has been placed in the offices and hallways of campus buildings.
In addition to the possible underpass murals, Benedict would also like to see additional artwork placed around campus on a rotating basis. “I think projects like this can provide a personality to a community whether it is a campus or a town,” said Benedict.
“I think it would be a good idea, especially if everyone around campus could get involved and make a contribution to the murals,” said Colleen Callahan, junior English major.
Because the underpass is a very public space, there would need to be much consideration given to what artwork is featured. “Perhaps the creation of a mural team would be appropriate, composed of students, faculty, staff and perhaps even community members,” said Benedict.
