Moving forward, The Picket goes digital

(THE PICKET) – Most students interviewed on campus this week about The Picket’s move to a fully-digital format were positive about the newly announced change.

When asked how people get their news, the initial response of many was social media in one form or another.

Ashley, a student who wished to remain without a last name, was happy to share her preferred platforms, explaining, “Facebook and twitter are just easy, we’re already looking at them, so you see the headlines.”

“This is a great change, as long as the presence is made known to students,” said history professor Sally Brasher. “Digital increases easier and faster information in so many ways.”

Students interviewed also said they favored the move from print because they generally get their news from social media.

Graduate hall director Alex Vogel expressed some concerns about the change. “An application may cut down on attention in some ways,” Vogel said. “People who would just walk by and pick up a paper because the headline looks interesting may not be looking for a separate website or item.” She continued, adding if it already connects with other media that she’s using, that could make a difference in readership.

The Picket app is available for Android phones and an iPhone app will be available soon. Stay tuned to the website at supicket.com, Twitter @supicket, and Instagram at supicketgram for updates.
