For the freshmen who have mastered the campus layout already or upperclassmen looking for somewhere different to visit off-campus during free times, Shepherdstown is extremely close to a variety of great locations and activities. Check out these awesome spots in cities near Shepherd University.
Antietam Battlefield: Antietam is a dream destination for history majors or history lovers at Shepherd. One of the most famous battlefields in U.S. history (for being the bloodiest battle of the Civil War) is located only seven miles from campus. You can walk around the battlefield either to tour or for some outdoor hiking and exercise. For history lovers, there are also volunteer positions and internships available for Shepherd students throughout the year.
Nutter’s Ice Cream: Nutter’s is the best spot for local ice cream. Stop in for a quick cup or cone of creamy frozen custard or ice cream after dinner at the dining hall or for a midday treat. With a variety of slushies, soft serve ice cream and gigantic portion sizes, featuring more than 20 flavors of ice cream, Nutter’s is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. However, Nutter’s does not accept credit cards, so make sure to take enough cash or drop by an ATM before stopping in for some delicious ice cream.
Belle Boyd House: Another perfect spot for history buffs is the Belle Boyd House. Located about nine miles from Shepherd University is the house of famous Civil War spy, Belle Boyd. You can tour the house on weekends and also attend special holiday events during the year.
Charles Town Hollywood Racetrack and Casino: The Hollywood Casino and Racetrack is a great place for some weekend fun and relaxation. With dozens of slot tables, gaming opportunities and the enormous racetrack, the casino is a wonderful spot for some fun for Shepherd students 21 and older. The casino also offers a variety of restaurants, including buffets, a sky deck and many different concerts and performances from many well-known musicians throughout the year.
Berkeley Plaza Theater: Berkeley Plaza is a super bargain for movie-loving college students. Movie tickets are only $7 and the most common refreshments run from $2-$5. You can see the latest hit movies and buy a popcorn and soda all for less than the price of a ticket at a major cinema chain. Though the theater is a bit smaller than national cinema chains, the cheap ticket prices and close proximity to Shepherd make it a bargain nearly impossible to beat.
