Lady Rams take loss in overtime

(THE PICKET) – Women’s basketball lost Thursday to Fairmont State in overtime 83-74.

Rams fought through the entire game, keeping the score relatively close, with four lead changes throughout the game.

The first period ended 20-12 in favor of the Falcons. The second period ended in favor of Fairmont State as well 44-29. Shepherd fought back in the third quarter and came back 52-55 FSU going into the fourth. The Rams mustered up all the fight they had and battled through the last buzzer when Liz Myers hit a jumper with five seconds left, tying the game, ending regulation time at a stalemate of 70-70, forcing overtime. FSU took the initial lead in overtime 73-70 and kept that lead the remainder of overtime and handed Shepherd a 74-83 loss.

Sophomore guard Morgan Arden scored a career and game-high 31 points. She connected on 12-of-22 field goals with a 1-of-3 performance from three-point range. She was 6-of-6 from the foul line. Arden added a team-high five assists.

Myers, junior forward, added 13 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Sophomore guard Tiffany McKinney contributed 11 points, while freshman guard Kari Lankford posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Her 12 rebounds tied a career high.

The Rams connected on 47.7 percent (31-65) from the floor with a 25 percent (2-8) performance from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 76.9 percent of its free throws (10-13). Fairmont State hit on 49.2 percent (29-59) of its field goals with a 23.5 percent (4-17) effort from beyond the arc. The Falcons were successful on 77.8 percent (21-27) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 35-34 edge in rebounding and forced 19 turnovers and committed 20.

The Rams will return to the court on Saturday when they host Glenville State at 2 p.m.
